Your A-Game Starts Here: You Need to Feel Good About Yourself

In all my experience watching students and athletes attempt to accomplish goals ranging from excelling at academics to landing championships, I've discovered that there's one crucial difference between the people who are successful and those who are not...

The ones who are successful inherently feel good about themselves.

No matter what kind of goals you wish to accomplish, it's a fact of life that it's nearly impossible to get to where you want to go if you don't feel good about yourself.

It goes without saying that if you feel good about yourself, you're more likely to propel yourself toward your most lofty goal. There's no crippling self-doubt; there's no negative voice telling you that you can't. And even if those things do creep up every once in a while (which is normal) your positive feelings and emotions are more than enough to silence those negative thoughts before they take root.

Then look at the other side of the scale. If you're in a state where you perpetually feel bad about yourself, you're automatically stifling every single goal before you've even taken a step toward it. When you feel bad about yourself, you don't have the strength to stay disciplined when temptation eventually rears its ugly head. For example, if you're attempting to shed 20 pounds, feeling bad about yourself will prevent you from standing strong against those temptations for sweet desserts or waking up early for a 5:00 a.m. gym session.

As a strength and conditioning coach, I see the difference that it makes every single practice. I have seen athletes who will push themselves until they're crying sweat. They know hat if they push themselves just a little bit farther, they'll be better rebounders or faster runners. They know that they're worthy of the hard work, pain, and exertion--because at the end of the day, they have the kind of self-worth and confidence that sees them through even the most painful practices.

If you're not achieving your goals, or you're failing to reach your New Year's resolutions year after year, maybe it's time to take a step toward feeling good about yourself again. When you're truly engaged in your life--that means taking advantage of the numerous blessings, friendships, and opportunities that are presented to you each and every day--there's just no time for negativity and you will naturally feel good and optimistic.
