There's a Chinese proverb that reads, "The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it."
I thought about this saying after recently hearing the story behind a prestigious novel published several years ago entitled The Secret Life of Bees. This book was a New York Times bestseller written by Sue Monk Kidd with over 8 million copies being sold. In addition to that, a major movie was adapted from this best-selling book. An interesting detail surrounding the book was that Kidd was told by a writing professor that the story idea "was not novel worthy". It's a good thing Kidd didn't listen!
Anytime you commit to mobilizing a vision, you have to program yourself to tune out N.O.I.S.E., which I define as "Negative Opinions Impeding Smart Endeavors". This is especially true if your thinking doesn't correspond with the limited vision of others. Innovation brings pessimists out of the woodwork and they're usually the ones who aren't taking much action towards evolving in their own lives.
When dealing with skeptics, including "experts", who have all of the answers to why your ideas will not work, you must constantly remind yourself that most of the people known for their world-changing thoughts or creations were initially written off and rejected. Automobile inventor, Henry Ford, was one of them. What if he had given in to the N.O.I.S.E. around him? I guess we would all be travelling by horse to our destinations.
Since N.O.I.S.E. can come from all types of people, in various settings of your life, don't count on simply winning people over, or avoiding them. I recommend you adopt the perspective that negative opinions are energy sources to help you drive yourself into action to reach the finish line of your goal destination. Nothing silences the N.O.I.S.E. of a detractor more effectively than success or winning!
My challenge for you this week:
In developing your game plan to handle the N.O.I.S.E. of distractors, you will need to perform the following tasks:
Write down one important thing you want to accomplish.
Construct a list of benefits to you having made this accomplishment.
Make a list of "exciting challenges" you expect along the journey of your goal accomplishment.
Once the first 3 tasks have been completed, take this list with you everywhere you go!
Whenever you encounter N.O.I.S.E., pull out your list and review it as a positive affirmation that you are on track to do something worthwhile, impactful, and amazing to others.
Repeat #1-5 for anything significant that you want to accomplish.
Are you ready? Because once you tune out the N.O.I.S.E., you'll be on your way to accomplishing some great things!
