What is Eating Up Your Transformation Time?

Recently, a friend of mine shared his desire to start going to the gym. He wanted to get healthier and improve his stamina and strength. He has a very active lifestyle, which is what distracts him away from a daily workout schedule.

It is widely recommended that individuals get a physical examination prior to starting a new workout program, so he made an appointment to see his doctor. During the check-up, his doctor measured his body fat, weight, and blood pressure. Although body fat was a little elevated, everything was relatively normal, which meant that he had no medical roadblocks to prevent him from exercising.

Yet there was one big problem: When would he be able to fit in his workouts? This is a problem that many people face, but it's a surprisingly simple one to solve.

He maintained that an hour a day in his lifestyle is relatively hard to find, so I asked him, "How much time you spend using gadgets?" When he asked what I meant, I explained to him that there are times when people are sitting and not engaged in anything productive. Instead, they are preoccupied with gadgets!

A Nielsen Company audience report reveals that adults in the United States devote about 10 hours and 39 minutes each day to consuming media. This means we spend nearly half our waking day using our tablets, smartphones, personal computers, multimedia devices, video games, radios, DVDs, DVRs and TVs.

There are, of course, times when you need to use these devices, such as to perform your job or school requirements, or even to conduct personal business. But, when you entertain yourself with these devices, you are turning otherwise productive time into unproductive time. This reduces the amount of time you have available to transform your life into something better and something more fulfilling!

My friend fell into this category of folks who have grown "device addicted." He admitted to spending enormous hours talking or texting on his cell phone, and surfing the Internet. "That time," I said, "is your gym time!"

I suggested that he keep his cell phone and laptop in cases until there is a purposeful time to use them. That positions him to better resist the temptation to play on these devices because they are out of sight. This was a major first step toward freeing up valuable time to improve his life and I urge YOU to join us in this gadget management process.

My challenge for you this week:

Track and control your gadget time!

  1. On a daily basis, track the amount of time you spend using your electronic gadgets for non-business purposes.

  2. What intentional activities can you engage yourself to advance a personal or professional goal?

  3. Commit to making this your lifestyle for two weeks and track the things you accomplish during this time.

If you find you're not getting the things done that are important to you, be sure to analyze your gadget time. This week's challenge may very well be the key to finding the time you need to achieve your goals and dreams!
