How High Will You Bounce?

October 8, 2017

One of the things I hate to hear people say is "I've tried, but..." Trying is fine, but once you have tried and failed, guess what, it is time to try again. Failure is not a reason to give up. If you give up, all you're doing is depriving yourself of the wonderful life that you could have.

The famous and infamous World War II General, George S. Patton had a plaque that he kept on his desk through all of his travels. Its message was simple but he felt it was an important part of the victories he experienced both on and off the battlefield:

"Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom."

Too often when we encounter adversities in our lives, whether physical, emotional, financial, career, or any other area, those adversities can make us want to give up. If it is in an area that we feel we have given an honest effort, it is that much harder to give another try. But, and this is a big but, what separates the successful from those who have merely tried, is that successful people live for the opportunity of another chance! They will not be defeated!!

You can wallow in self-pity or you can pick yourself up and give it another go. The funny thing about hitting rock bottom is that you only have one way to go, up!

You think it is bad to hit rock bottom? Think of the people who started there and had to fight every step of the way just to get back to even, much less get ahead.

  • Starbucks' Howard Schultz grew up in the projects. Now he is a billionaire with 16,000 stores under his command. That is a pretty big bounce.

  • John Paul DeJoria, better known as Paul Mitchell, grew up in foster homes and started out selling shampoo door to door. His last recorded personal net worth was in the 12-digit range. Not bad for a kid who lived in abandoned cars to escape foster care.

  • And, of course, we all know Oprah's story. She hit bottom so many times and bounced a little higher every time. She flies pretty high now.

Try, fail, hit rock bottom--but don't lay there! Bounce back up on your feet and try harder. Learn from your mistakes but don't become them. Quitting is the only true failure in life.

My challenge for you this week:

Understand your ability to bounce back from unexpected scenarios.

  1. Write down three situations when you failed at something, but eventually won.

  2. For those times, ask yourself "what made you try again?"

  3. Write down something important you have desired to accomplish, but have, so far, been unsuccessful.

  4. What positive feelings and life enhancements will you experience by achieving the goal?

  5. What actions must you engage in to reach the goal?

  6. Effective immediately, do them!

Don't get discouraged when you face failures. When you take the steps in this week's challenge, you'll find out how high you'll be able to bounce back!
