In one of our recent Success Challenges, we talked about the importance of having patience when trying to achieve your dreams. How that people today have become so used to living in an instant world where everything is pretty much available when you want it and how you want it.
In this article, we are going to talk about one of the main reasons why it is important to develop a plan of action towards your goals: A plan of action allows you to lay a sound foundation on which to build your success. It doesn't matter how high you want to climb in life, your ladder has got to have a solid footing if you don't want it to slip, slide, and dump you on your head.
Did you know that in the construction business about 10% of all building costs are in the foundation? It doesn't matter if they are building a single family home or a 1,000-story skyscraper, the percentage stays the same. Why? Because they know that the higher you go the stronger and more solid the foundation must be.
You can't build your house upon the sand and expect it stand. Neither can you build your life on shaky ground. It doesn't make any difference what area of your life your goals lie, you have to build it from the ground up.
Do you want to be healthy? You can't get there sitting on the couch eating chips and drinking beer. You have got to develop basic healthy habits like daily exercise and a proper diet.
Do you want that big promotion? You have got to lay a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to earn it.
Do you want to start your own business? You have got to gain a basic understand of accounting, marketing and a half dozen other subjects or you will get caught short.
Do you want to be happy? You have got to develop a solid slab of positive thoughts and emotional support.
There are no shortcuts to success. You have to crawl before you can walk or you will spend your life stumbling over your own feet.
My challenge for you this week:
Build a foundation for your success!
Define your idea of success. Make sure you write out your idea!
Break your idea of success into its most basic elements. These are the types of people and experiences you desire.
Develop a plan of how to work your way towards the rich fulfilling life you know you deserve.
Remember, it is all on you. You can try to cut corners and be caught on the shifting sands or you can build your life on a rock-solid foundation.
