Keep Working Your Plan!

In the last few weeks, we have talked about developing a plan to reach your goals and about laying a sound foundation to build your future success upon. This week we are going to add a word of caution: Don't be too rigid in following your plan.

Having a plan is a must if you are going to make the greatest strides in the shortest possible time, but be aware that you can't simply come up with a plan and then follow it blindly. Plans can't be static and your foundation for future success shouldn't be a "build and forget" effort.

Medical doctors, some of the best-educated people in our society, still spend as much as ten hours a week reading medical journals.

Google, arguably one of the most successful endeavors ever launched, makes updates to its search engine functions thousands of times every month.

Why do doctors continually read? Why does Google never stop polishing their gem?

Because both are smart enough to know they must continually grow their knowledge base and incorporate the latest information into their practices to stay on top. New information is being developed every day so changing their plan and allowing room for it to evolve is an important part of the plan itself. It should be a part of yours too.

All of my life I understood that losing weight was a simple matter of eating less and exercising more. Now I've learned that this is wrong and that one of the easiest ways to lose weight is to reset your metabolism by eating more.

I can't say I understand this or that it makes any sense to me, but the research backs it up. Eat more to lose weight sounds a little crazy, but it is all part of what has recently been learned about this wonderful machine we live in.

There is no such thing as perfect knowledge. In every field of human endeavor, new things are learned every day. Oftentimes, new information completely upends what was once thought to be the truth, so we must be able to adapt.

Develop your plan and lay your foundation, but never believe that the job is finished. Continue to study. Continue to strive. Just make sure you don't fall behind because you thought you knew enough. "Enough" is a word I hate because it is just an excuse for being lazy and lazy people never bring their A-game.

My challenge for you this week:

Develop a personal growth plan.

  • What will you commit to getting a little bit better at every day?

  • What will you do to gain more knowledge? (read, listen to podcasts, attend seminars, get a mentor/coach, etc.)

  • Where will your learning occur? (home, car, church, etc.)

  • How many hours per day will you devote to your personal growth? (a one-hour minimum is required)

  • Commit to working your plan on a daily basis.
