Know That You Don't Know, Then Learn

In many of our past articles, we have spent time talking about the importance of setting goalslaying a foundation, and developing a plan to take you where you want to go in life. Today is going to be just a little different. Instead of focusing on the plan itself, we are going to talk about the most important component of that plan: YOU. More specifically, we are going to talk about the importance of being honest with yourself and recognizing where you really are in your development.

   

As the old saying goes, "It's hard to get where you want to go if you don't know where you're at."

   

Abraham Harold Maslow, a noted psychologist, developed what he described as the 4 Stages of Learning. They are:

  1. Unconscious IncompetenceYou are not good at something but believe you are or you think you understand something that you don't.

  2. Conscious IncompetenceYou have learned enough to know that you don't know.

  3. Conscious CompetenceYou know how but you have to put thought and effort into it.

  4. Unconscious CompetenceYou no longer have to think or focus to perform a task, you just do it. This could be called Mastery.

While Level 4 is the stage you should always be shooting for, too many people unfortunately get stuck at Level 1.

   

Many people believe that "bringing your A-Game" is just about "always doing your best," and that is definitely a part of it; but, just as importantly, it involves admitting that you're not good at something and finding a way to get better.

   

That is why doctors continue to study, athletes continue to practice,  and you should focus just as much, if not more, on your weaknesses as you do on your strengths. To truly be the best you can be and reach the highest heights in life you can't just do what is easy. You have got to root out your own incompetence, recognize your weakness, and work hard to correct it.

   

Not many of us enjoy doing things we're not good at. Fewer still like admitting to ourselves, or to others, that we have a weakness that needs to be overcome. 

 

Do you want to be successful?

Do you want to be the best "You" possible?

Do you want to truly bring your A-game to all that you do? 

  

If so, then be honest about your skill levels and strive for mastery in every aspect of your life.

   

My challenge for you this week:

 

Create a higher consciousness regarding your skill level to acquire your goals.

  1. What are your two top goals for 2018?

  2. Write down the skills that will be necessary to achieve these goals.

  3. Using Maslow's 4 stages of learning, place a 1-4 rating by each skill that you listed above.

  4. You should have some skills that rate below level 4, so commit to elevating your skills in these areas.

  5. Write down the things that you will commit to doing to ensure that you will stay focused.
