Success is No Accident

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do." - Pele "Some people dream of success while others wake up every morning and make it happen." - Wayne Huizenga These are two of my favorite quotes. Here are a couple of guys who understood what it meant to bring your "A Game" to every aspect of their lives! Pele, for those not familiar with him, was a young man who grew up in the slums of Brazil. He literally came from nothing, spending his formative years living in a shack made of scrap wood, discarded tin sheeting, and tar paper. He lived in a neighborhood where a young man was more likely to be murdered or die of an overdose before he was eighteen than he was to ever see the inside of a schoolroom.

For him, though, there was no excuse for not succeeding. He fought his way out of the gutter and became the most famous player in the world's most popular game, soccer (or "football" as it's called in Brazil). He led his national team to three consecutive World Cups and was voted World Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics. Wayne Huizenga began life as the son of Dutch immigrant parents living in Chicago. He started out with a truck hauling garbage in Fort Lauderdale when he got tired of working for minimum wage. That one truck became Waste Management Inc. which has since grown into a business empire that spans the globe and includes the Miami Dolphins, Florida Marlins, and Florida Panthers sports teams. Do you think they came from such humble beginnings and climbed to such heights by crying over how hard their lives were? Do you think they wasted time worrying about how disadvantaged they were or blaming others because they were poor? No! They fought, sometimes literally, for what they wanted out of life. They got up every day and put in the sweat and effort to make themselves better. They didn't look for excuses, they looked for opportunities, and when they realized the world didn't pass them out for free, they found ways to create their own.

You can't wait for the world to hand you success. You have got to work for it. You have got to look for the opportunities that either don't exist, or that others have missed, and seize them like your life depends on it. That is the essence of bringing your "A Game" to life! My challenge for you this week:

Take responsibility for your own success.

  1. What is the thing you want to accomplish that will require more intentional effort and energy than you have devoted to something in a long time?

  2. List the things that prevent you from making a total commitment to making it happen?

  3. Write down one or two ways you will manage or eliminate each obstacle listed.

  4. Implement your combat plan, so you are left with no more excuses!

Get started today and you'll find that you can make success happen in your life!
