It's Time to Escape!

Are you feeling overwhelmed by life? I'm not talking about just your job, but by life in general?

Maybe what you need to do is back off and take a vacation!

I know it may sound a little crazy, but science backs it up: If you are having trouble keeping up on the job, if your personal relationships are fading, or if your health is heading downhill, there is a good chance that what you need to do is take a break from it all.

Over the course of a normal week, I am blessed to encounter a variety of people. This includes people from all racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, and cultural backgrounds. It also includes those from the affluent to the poverty stricken. What I have found is that there are two common denominators among all people: a desire to be loved, and a desire to possess a freedom from stress and worry. While I will be mainly dealing with the second of the two common denominators, you may be surprised at how much the two of them are related!

Here are a few facts you may not be aware of:

North Americans take less time off work than almost any other group of people in the world. At the same time, they have some of the lowest productivity levels, highest divorce rates, highest rates of hypertension and heart disease, and highest rates of depression and mental disorders.

I know logic doesn't dictate that these things are all related but science does.

Living with stress produces a hormone called cortisol, or more commonly known as the "Stress Hormone". It has not only been found to contribute to the health issues mentioned above, but it can actually change how your brain is wired and can affect your emotional state.

On the other hand, stepping back and taking the time to relax can lead to higher success in all areas of your life. There are the obvious benefits of lowering your stress levels, giving your mind a chance to recharge, and helping to negate all those bad effects that cortisol causes.

But, the benefits go way beyond these.

If you are having troubles in your personal life, you may be surprised to find out how much a little time away from the worries of work and school can do to improve things. It will give you a chance to reconnect and build memories that can help you make it through the rough times.

Now you may be thinking: "That's wonderful but I can't afford to take a trip!"

Vacations don't have to mean going to Maui. Take a three-day trip to a neighboring state, or even an in-state city away from your place of residence. Stay home and visit some of those local attractions you never had time to visit.

The main thing is that you need to forget the grind and reconnect with what really matters in life.

My challenge for you this week:

Make time to take time for yourself.

  1. Make a list of places you want to visit?

  2. Break your list into local places and distance places.

  3. Pick one from each list and commit to visiting them this year. Yes, 2018!

  4. Take out your calendar and decide on your trip dates.

  5. Reserve a hotel in the cities you will staying in.

  6. Announce your plan to anyone necessary. Of course, you reserve the option of inviting someone on your trip.

  7. In anticipation of the trip, to build up excitement, each week research things that will be happening in those cities during your visit. Book tickets for events that appeal to you.

It's time to plan your escape! If you don't do it now, you will be forever caged by the daily grind of your normal routine.
