The Power of Why

Have you ever heard the expression, "When the 'why' is strong enough the 'how' will be found"?

If you take a minute to think about it, this is a very profound statement because it illustrates one of the most common reasons that people fail to achieve their goals and overcome the obstacles in their life: Either they have not found a "why" strong enough, or they have never taken the time to actually define their true "why".

If you ask any successful person why they did something a certain way, they will, in almost every case, answer without even needing time to think. They understand the power of why. They also know that we as humans are lazy creatures and that we need a driving force to push us into action.

Last week, I talked about the importance of writing things down. In that post, I encouraged you to start keeping a journal so you can read and draw inspiration from reviewing your triumphs and better learn from your failures.

I hope you took my advice and bought yourself a notebook.

One of the first things in your notebook should be a list of your goals. Right after that, you need to start defining the "why" behind every one of those goals on your list.

This is gut check time! It's the time you need to get real with yourself and to get to the roots of the way you feel.

  • Do you want to get an education? Why?

  • Do you want to get a good job? Why?

  • Do you want to earn enough money to comfortably raise your family? Why?

On a routine basis, I have the opportunity to work with clients to help them discover their compelling "why." I know that a strong "why" combined with bold action is enough to make an achiever out of anyone. Just like those clients, you must get in touch with that timid child that is still living inside of you. When you do, you will find many answers to the problems that are holding you back.

You will soon realize that the kind of self-analysis that I am prescribing in this article is not easy and can be a little scary, but it is important to know where your roots really are so that you can tap into that emotional energy.

My challenge for you this week:

Take time this week to get down to the bare metal of the "whys" in your life.

  1. Make a new list of priority goals

  2. Under each goal, write the compelling "why" that will help you stay dedicated to achieving it.

  3. Begin to live your life in alignment with the mindset that "When your 'why' is strong enough the 'how' will be found."

The drive you will gain from finding your "whys" can lead to amazing things, so let's get started!
