Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive

A major part of what I do is built on the grounds of always trying to find new inspirations and looking at the old ones in new ways. Another part is to rethink everything that crosses my path and look at those things in a new light.

  

 

This past week I was listening to some golden oldies music and had one of those ah-ha moments that take me to a higher level of consciousness. The song I was listening to was "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive" by the late Aretha Franklin.  In case you are unfamiliar with the song, I encourage you to "google" it (or check it out on Youtube)! Bing Cosby was also known for singing this song. Whichever you listen to, the lyrics go like this:

 

"You got to ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive.

E-lim-i-nate the negative.

Latch on to the affirmative.

Don't mess with mister in-between."

 

For a song that will be 75 years old this year, those are some pretty relevant lyrics that provide some great advice on how to live a successful life.

 

You do need to "accentuate the positive".  You have got to find those things that you are good at, make you feel good about life, and then push them to the front of your priorities.

  

You have got to "eliminate the negative".  Those negative influences, like bad habits and negative people, have got to be banished from your world.

  

It is best to "latch on to the affirmative".  Those upbeat people in your life that encourage you to do and be more, those optimistic plans you have drawn up so you can make progress on your way to a meaningful life, those positive thoughts and self-talk that you use to keep yourself pumped up--those things you have got to latch on to and hold as close to your heart as you can.

  

"Don't mess with mister in-between".  This is my favorite line. This has probably slowed down more people's progress than anything else in the world. The "mister in-between" refers to people or behaviors that we let linger around us.  While they are not blatantly disruptive in a negative way, they add no value to our transformational growth. We rationalize each of these people by insisting that they are "not a bad person" so we'll keep them around. Video games, television, or romance novels aren't deliberately bad so we'll keep playing them, watching shows, or reading them.

   

Nothing is inconsequential! If people or things are not lifting you up, then they are dragging you down. Time or effort wasted is gone forever, so all of those in-between things have got to go! Remember if you don't run your life then it will run you; straight into the wall of despair, depression, and disappointment over the life you could be enjoying.

  

My challenge for you this week:

  1. Take a few minutes this week to make a list of your positives, negatives, and in-betweens.

  2. Focus on your in-betweens.  Write down ways that you will minimize the time spent on those people or behaviors that fall within this category.

  3. Pledge to use this extra discovered time on positive behavior that will move you closer to achieving your life goals.

When you "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive" your life will be totally different...and you may even find yourself humming the tune as you go through your week!
