How Do You Live a Successful Life?

March 18, 2019

In all my travels in various circles of people, I have discovered that everyone is looking to have a successful life. Even with the ups and downs, the highs and lows of life, everyone wants to have the sum of their experiences add up to a life filled with success.

A young professional recently asked me, "How do you live a successful life?" I told him that becoming successful is not complicated, but you must be open to everything and closed to nothing. Translate that last sentence to mean there are so many options for us to explore that we should not limit ourselves to a vision of success that occurred in the past days, months, or years. Nevertheless, people tend to stick to the status quo, because that's where they have perceived certainty and control. Unfortunately, this style of living is filled with frustration over what could have been! So my question to you is this: Are you willing to give up your perceived certainty and control so that you can discover your next level of a successful life?

Every year, I read hundreds of books. I especially enjoy reading about well-known people who are considered successful. They all come from different backgrounds. Some of them grew up poor, some were college dropouts, and some had difficulties with learning. Despite all the problems and challenges they had on their path to becoming famous, each of these individuals continuously produced excellent results in life. They made excellence an expected outcome of their actions!

Here are two steps that I believe are essential to living a happy, and successful life.

1. Define what success means to you

Knowing what success means to you helps you understand what it is that you want to achieve. Success means different things to different people. Some define success as having lots of money. Others believe it is living a happy life or traveling the world. Whatever it means to  you, it is important that you take some time to write down a clear vision of what you want to accomplish. For me, I define success as being a high impact person who radiates love, compassion, and a persistent pattern of helping others. A great day for me is knowing that I used my power to advance someone's life.

2. Stay Focused

Focus on doing your best every day. Don't let other things distract you from living out your definition of success. Focus your mind and thoughts on your vision of success and move toward that direction. Even if you fail, or the action you take is not taking you to where you want, it is alright. Just like Steve Jobs when he got fired, he managed to refocus. If you focus on your evolution and move in the right direction each day, you will eventually reach the destination you desire. Success is not something that will happen overnight.

Therefore, stay focused!

I urge you not to sleep on your dreams of success. 50 Cent, the rapper, once said, "Sleep is for those people who are broke." He may have been referring to "broke" in terms of money, but I decree it to mean broken in their faith that all things are possible.

You need to be committed to your vision, goals, and purpose. Successful people have an intense, burning desire for what they want, so be dedicated to cultivating that strong desire for success. Do you have a fire inside of you for living a successful life?

My challenge for you this week:

Create a defining moment that leads to success!

  1. Write down your definition of success for your life.

  2. What action-oriented steps can you take to live up to your definition of success?

  3. Identify the things that distract your focus.

  4. List ways to manage your distractions.

  5. Make a daily note of the things you avoided in order to advance your notion of a successful life.
