Embrace Your Happiness

In many of my articles I talk about ways to improve your lot in life. I discuss how important it is to always be pushing forward, striving to be and to achieve more. This one is going to be completely different. Today, I want to remind you of one of the most important keys to having a happy life: Being thankful for the little joys that you experience every day!

Many times, we become so focused on the future that we forget to appreciate the present. We don't take the time to look around us and say "thank you". Yes, times can get hard, life can beat you down, and it can be very easy to become discouraged. All of that is true, but...and I'm sure you knew a but was coming...life is also a wonderful experience if we allow ourselves to realize it.

A thousand beautiful things inhabit our lives and they are right in front of our eyes--all we need to do is recognize them.

  • A baby's laugh.

  • A hug from a friend or loved one.

  • The sun on your face as you walk down the street.

  • A cool breeze on a hot day.

  • The smell of freshly cut grass.

There is always something that you should be thankful for!

I know you may think things are bad in your world, but consider this example found in the Bible: Even when Job lost practically everything he had--including his health, his family, his possessions--he still continued to give thanks. Listen to the Book of Psalms where there are numerous exhortations for us to "give thanks in all things".

I will tell you this: Big and small, there are a million things to be thankful for every day. There are a million things that can bring happiness to your life...if you let them!

Learn to be thankful. Embrace and enjoy your happiness!

Please, don't miss this point: Not one of us is promised tomorrow. Not one of us knows what will happen in the next millisecond of our lives. What we do know is that we are here now and it is our choice whether or not we look for the joy in the moment and focus on the beauty that life offers.

Do yourself a favor this week by starting a gratitude journal. I have kept one for the past eleven years and I am confident that you will find that counting your blessings each day will make you a much happier person.

My challenge for you this week:

Track your happiness with a gratitude journal!

  • Purchase a journal and conduct a daily audit of your happy moments.

  • Write down the experiences that made you happy.

  • What makes you feel a sense of happiness about these experiences?

  • Set the goal of experiencing and recognizing seven happy moments a day.

Enjoy life to the fullest!
