Did You Know That It's Up to You?

For those of you who have heard me speak or have read any of my writings, you know that I'm pretty upbeat and full of positive energy. There are times, however, when a little "tough love" is needed. To some, that is how today's message may come across. To others (I am hoping a majority of you), it will be just a confirmation of what you already know and understand. Either way, this will possibly be the most honest and universally applicable bit of advice you will ever receive. Simply put, it is up to you!

Not sure what to do with your life? It is up to you to figure it out.

Not happy with your appearance or level of fitness? It is up to you to change it.

Not happy in your relationship or in your job? It is up to you to figure out why and make the changes to correct the situation.

All that coaches, trainers, counselors, teachers, or I can do to help you along the way, is to give you the ideas and tools to work with, the benefit of an outside perspective, and little nudges in the right direction. When it comes to putting in the work, making the changes, and calling the right shots, that, my friend, is up to you!

You can watch all the fitness videos there are on YouTube and hire a personal trainer but you will never gain an ounce of muscle or drop the weight until you put in the work.

You can take all the classes available on personal finance or even get a degree in economics but until you change how you handle your money, you will only view money as a scarce resource.

You can attend every lecture by every life coach and motivational speaker; you can read all our books, articles, and blog posts; you can even pay for private sessions with me or one of my colleagues; however, until you put those ideas into action, your life is never going to change.

Some of you may know that I have battled a speech impediment since my childhood. I have been enrolled in special education courses, and have feverishly read books, attended workshops, and practiced the art of speaking over my lifetime. Yes, I have put in many hours of work, and continue to do so.

So as you can see, instead of shying away from the challenge, I battled it. Now, I am very comfortable speaking in front of hundreds and thousands of people and have realized that the challenge was just an opportunity in disguise. I used the same approach to go from fat to fit and to win bodybuilding titles. Again, I put in the work and you can too!!

It's a hard truth but one that cannot be denied: Without action nothing changes! Sadly, no one can put any ideas into action for you--you have got to do it for yourself!

I can talk until I'm blue and type until the letters vanish from the keyboard, but I can't stand you up and make you move forward. I can only offer you a helping hand. Taking that hand and standing up is totally on you, my friend.

As we approach 2020, please connect with me to let me know how I can help make your entry into the new year successful.

My challenge for you this week:

Start your journey forward by answering the following questions and taking the following actions:

  1. When you read this article, what came to mind as something you know "is up to you" to take action to change?

  2. Write down the work necessary to make those results happen.

  3. Select the date you will start your transformation.

  4. Clear out any unnecessary distractions before you begin.

  5. Get going, and don't return to your old life habits of thinking, feeling, or behaving.

  6. Who do you need to connect with to coach you to success on this journey toward change?

It's time to make the connection so that you and your coach can co-hold you accountable for continuous progress. It's time to take these steps now to prevent excuses and end procrastination!
